LIFE SCIENCES SUMMER INSTITUTE

“The boot camp sped up the adjustment process once we started working in the lab, and it also saved our mentors a great amount of time. Not only were all the interns able to hone their lab techniques, but “soft skills” sessions and just spending the entire week together in a classroom helped build our personal relationships with each other and created a bond that lasted even after we separated into different labs.” -

In collaboration with BIOCOM, San Diego Workforce Partnership has developed a program to help increase awareness of the life science industry and related fields of research to students and teachers in the San Diego region. Students gain exposure to career options, hands-on laboratory experience, work readiness skills, and mentoring by a company or research scientists.
Summer 2008 is the fourth year for the Life Sciences Summer Institute (LSSI) program, which will target upper-level high school, community college, and university students as well as high school and community college teachers.
The student internship programs includes a one-week pre-internship “Boot Camp” training, held at the Southern California Biotechnology Center at Miramar College, followed by an industry paid internship within San Diego’s life science industry or academic research institute, and concluding with the development of a scientific poster. Posters will be displayed during the program’s culminating awards gala.
The teacher externship program includes a similar one-week “Boot Camp” training, held at Biogen Idec’s Community Lab facility, where teachers receive an industry introduction and hands-on laboratory training using the AMGEN-Bruce Wallace Biotechnology Laboratory Program curriculum. Following the training, teachers are exposed to the local industry through ½ day industry externship experiences, concluding each day with curriculum connection and implementation workshops.
Both the student and teacher laboratory trainings are supplemented with materials and supplies donated by Invitrogen.
